Discussion about ketones as alternative fuel for the brain and other effects of ketones.
Mary T. Newport, M.D. grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, attended Xavier University and University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. She trained in Pediatrics at Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, and in neonatology at Medical University Hospital in Charleston, SC. She practiced full-time neonatology in Florida for 30 years and was founding medical director for two newborn intensive care units in the Tampa Bay area. She then provided home visits to hospice patients. She speaks worldwide. Dr. Newport was married to Steve Newport for 43 years. Steve lost his battle with Alzheimer's in January 2016. They have 2 daughters, and a grandson. In 2008 ,she wrote an article, “What If There Was a Cure for Alzheimer’s Disease and No One Knew?” relaying her research into a dietary intervention that produces mild ketosis that may benefit persons with Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases. Her books: "Alzheimer's Disease: What If There Was a Cure? The Story of Ketones" (2011; 2nd edition April 2013). I've been following all this closely. This disease runs deep on both sides of my family.
I am taking this myself and have been giving it to my mom in late stage AD, although we haven't been able to take as much as your husband Steve is taking. We are trying to work up a little at a time.
Thanks again Dr. Newport for all you are doing not only for Steve, but for all of us in this sad circumstance.

My mother, 82 years old, has Polycythemia Vera and Parkinson´s Disease. Now she is showing signs of mild dementia. I bought Nutiva Coconut Oil and since September 23, I´m giving her 2 tablespoons daily. Still no sign of brain improvement. Does anyone know how many days of CO should be taken until some sign of improvement appears?

Regarding Huntington's disease, this is one of the neurodegenerative diseases that involves decreased glucose uptake into cells, so there is every reason to believe that this could help as prevention for those who are at risk as well as potentially help with some of the symptoms for those who have it.

Regarding how long it may take to see some improvement, many report a gradual improvement rather than dramatic improvement. I suggest that you keep a journal of what your mother's symptoms are now for comparison later. Think about what physical symptoms she has, and if possible videotape her walking, talking, eating or doing other activities so that you can compare how she is doing month by month. For some people this seems to help keep them stable rather than worsening, and a journal will make it easier to determine if she is improving or at least stabilizing.
If she is tolerating the 2 tablespoons without diarrhea or upset stomach, you might consider increasing how much she takes over the course of the day gradually, so that she gets some three times a day. Some people are able to tolerate 6 tablespoons or more per day. It is usually tolerated best if taken with food, and some people who have trouble taking it all at once have learned that taking it a little at a time over 20-30 minutes while eating solves the problem.

I started cocnut oil and coconut milk (Powder) for my mom one week ago just when I decided (With the advice of her doctor) the Axona because we noticed irritation and confusion,insomnia and sweating since we start the Azona drug on March 2009.
I discovered your website lately and it was very supporting for me and I am very gratful for you, Dr NewPort for sharing your experience with us!
I will keep you updated,but I have to ask you Dr some questions and i hope that you will find the time to answer me:
Does Axona cause such irritation and confusion?
Does coconut milk powder make the same effect as coconut oil?
My mom is 75 and were diagnosed five years ago!

My mum has been taking the 6 tbsps/day with no adverse gastrointestinal effects. The mixture is 12/16 CO/MCT. Wondering what we can try next? increase portion of MCT or increase number of tbsps/day?

When the MCT oil reaches its peak it could cause the symptoms you noticed in some people.
The coconut milk powder is high in oil content so would be one alternative to use.
You could certainly put on weight if you add the calories from this much oil and don't subtract an equal amount of calories. Try substituting this for other fats in the diet; for example, use it instead of butter on toast and on veges, pasta, and cook with coconut oil instead of other oils - add a little peanut oil if you cook higher than medium heat. Also, try cutting back on portions of carbs such as potatoes, pasta, breads. Just a few of many possible ways to cut back on the other calories. Steve gained some weight at first, but has lost it all using these strategies.
Regarding how much more to take beyond 6 tablespoons of the mixture, you can experiment either way, more total oil or more MCT oil. And patience - it can take time to see changes and for some it may be stabilization. Think about how many years it took to get this way; it will take time to undo damage as well.

Dr. Newport, my step-father is the primary care giver of my mother who is suffering from Alzheimer's Disease. I shared your information about Coconut Oil and Ketones. Could you tell me if your husband, Steve, also suffers from diabetes? My step-father thinks that the ketones in the coconut oil may have helped get the sugars under control, thus feel better. I'm trying to convince him to at least talk to my mother's doctor about this and not just brush me off.

I can't tell you how much I LOVED your interview. I cried... I know it sounds strange but I couldn't get over the overwelming possibilities of this research. I am the youngest of 6 and I see diabetes, lupis, parkinson, and alzhimers intertwined in all of my family. I see a hopeful future without the possibilities of these things awful things ruining the short time we have on this earth. Thank You. I've told most of my family about your interviews and contacted the Dr Oz Show... hey, you never know. I had already been taking coconut oil for raising my LDL cholsterol. I'm going to try and contact some other groups about raising money for the ketone ester. This is truly a mirical I can't wait to tell the world. Thanks for the Hope.

Would caprylic acid be a more concentrated treatment form than coconut oil? Possibly without as many fat calories and possibly without over taxing a sluggish liver w/ low bile excretion?
Caprylic acid is a prevalent MCT and a medically available natural medicine used orally for systemic candida overgrowth.
Is it possible that encapsulated Caprylic acid would / could be a more effective and / or easier to take source of MCT's ?
My 85 yo mother w/ a family Hx of AD is having some very early AD sx's. She has gall stones and may not have great liver function so I am wondering if caprylic acid might simplify this metabolic pathway. Please let me know if it might be useful

Regarding diabetes, ketones actually do help control blood sugar, so it is not your father's imagination. My husband does not have type 1 or 2 diabetes; his fasting blood sugars are always below 80. Alzheimer's is now often called diabetes of the brain or diabetes type III, or brain starvation. Apparently there can be insulin resistance in the brain in a person that does not suffer from type 1 or 2 diabetes.
Regarding caprylic acid, it is absorbed directly by the intestine without needing digestive enzymes, so someone without a gallbladder would be able to absorb it; as you probably know, this is the active ingredient in Axona, the prescription form of medium chain triglycerides. Even with a gallbladder, many people experience diarrhea, gas or bloating if they try to take too much medium chain triglyceride oil, including pure caprylic acid, or coconut oil. It is a good idea for everyone, with or without a gallbladder, to start slow (about 1 teaspoon) and increase gradually. Also, it helps to take it with food, combine it with food, or take it slowly during the course of the meal, over 20-30 minutes. I don't have a gallbladder, and had indigestion when I tried taking 2 tablespoons right off the bat, however, have adjusted and don't have a problem with it now. Something to know about caprylic acid, the ketone levels peak at about 90 minutes after taking a dose and are pretty much gone after 3 hours; the levels are a bit lower but appear to hang around at least twice as long after eating coconut oil. We combine them to get the higher levels of MCT oil and longer lasting levels of coconut oil and this works well for Steve. When Steve had ketone body levels measured with MCT oil it was with pure caprylic acid (C:8.) My feeling about this is that everyone should experiment to find out what works best for them. For some, coconut oil or MCT oil alone will do the trick and for others the combination may be effective. For some, particularly where the person with AD is resistant to trying the oils, a prescription for Axona may be in order. They also recommend starting with a half-packet due to the problem with diarrhea that is very common.

This is my second comment to you. I started my husband on MCT & cocunut oil about one month ago. He did not have any side affects from the large amount. I should tell you that he is at risk for Huntington's disease. He has not been tested, he is 53 and I was noticing some changes in him., i.e. involunatry body movements, unsteady gait. Not severe, but noticiable to me who lives with him. So I thought this would be worth a try. Wow, I noticed a huge difference the first day and every day thereafter. He did not know for two weeks what I was doing so he could not have responded to the suggestion. The involuntary movements and unsteady gait went away immediately (about 95%) to the point that if it had not been worse to begin with I would not think it was anything but normal. So we do think he has the gene, but this is so amazing we feel we are doing all we can to prevent this disease so who needs to get tested. He is also losing some weight. Perhaps the difference in metabolism is having the reverse effect that you would think eating more fat would. Thank you for this amazing information.
